The center of Lisbon is considered by many to be a magical place, where modernity and history of the Portuguese capital intersect. In fact, walking through the center of Pombaline we find a cultural mix, different nationalities, a wide range of shops and restaurants, but always keeping the Portuguese spirit and all the typical aspects of Lisbon.
For a day or an afternoon well spent in this area of the city, characterized by the Portuguese pavement and its flat ground, we have prepared some fundamental points that you must visit. Prepared?
Commerce Square
It starts at one of the largest squares in Europe, Commerce Square, which has an area of around 35,000 square meters. Admire the imposing equestrian statue of D. José, which also justifies another of the names by which this square is known: Terreiro do Paço.
Here you are in the center of everything, you can take the opportunity to do some shopping or admire the wonderful view of the Tagus and the boats that cross the two banks of the river. If you feel like sitting down and chatting by the river, know that this is also possible, as it is a regular stop to relax at the end of the day (and has a unique sunset!).
Augusta Arch Street
With an architecture that refers to the greatness of the Portuguese empire at the time of the Discoveries, you can't help but marvel at this arch, which was designed after the historic earthquake of 1755. It is possible to climb to the top of Augusta Arch Street. The entrance costs only €3 and, from above, you can admire the Lisbon Cathedral, the 25 de Abril Bridge or the São Jorge Castle.
Santa Justa Lift
For fans of panoramic views, the Santa Justa Lift offers the ideal tour. Designed by a Portuguese engineer, a disciple of Eiffel (yes, the man who designed the Eiffel Tower), the elevator is 45 meters high and from it we can see the Lisbon Cathedral, Rossio Square, among many other beautiful points of the city .
Rossio Square
Here, in addition to the many restaurants, the highlight is the statue of Dom Pedro IV. Cool off sitting next to the fountain, or admire the Doña María II National Theatre that is located in the same square. If you have time, visit the theatre: you can see a show or enjoy guided tours that show the dressing rooms and all the details of this iconic space.
If you want to taste typical Portuguese sweets or strictly national drinks (ginjinha is always a great option), there are several quality bakeries and cafes in the Baixa area. But, if you still have time for more, we recommend a visit to Figueira Square, normally full of skater acrobatics.
